Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X- How is it going to make a drastic change? 

We are in a world where time really matters. It’s not something that matters in our personal life, but also professional life and we wish to get things done as quick as possible. We don’t like our system buffering when we need to check something important. It could be processing a huge file, playing video game, high end graphical designing etc. Speed is what that matters. Here is the greatest innovation by Intel introducing Optane SSD DC P4800X with 3D XPoint technology (a non- volatile memory technology developed by Intel and Micron).

It’s a combination of SSD and RAM, i.e 375GB SSD on a PCIe card. (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) Its planned to increase the capacity further in future. It is expected that Intel will launch 1.5TB add-in card and a 750GB U.2 varent.

Why is this innovation important?

Data is doubling every 2 years. It is not something that just needs to be stored, but also analyzed. The more data is involved, the more processing required. Computing requires faster storing of data in the storage device. The limitation of the previous technology of slow computing is not any more an issue after this innovation. The technology that we used were NAND and DRAM, the features of these are combined together for better performance keeping it non-volatility with increased speed. The Optane SSD DC P4800X is 1000 times faster than NAND, 1000 times long lasting than NAND and 10 times denser than DRAM. You can combine the storage and memory module to a single 3D XPoint memory module. In case if you don’t need much speed, you can store your data in the 3D XPoint memory module itself. It is almost like a complementary part that can be used in your system for better performance. A hard drive for storing data and an Optane will bring high speed computing. Optane can store the cache and physical storage of data can be in hard drive. It accelerates your PC without compressing your storage. This results in fast booting of the OS, less time to launch the applications and quick browsing.

Boosting the physical memory of servers is one of biggest advantage that Optane is going to carry. The data base can be accessed much faster with this technology.

Intel Optane does not work with Skylake chipset, Previous generation chipset or AMD chipsets, hopefully this can change in future. It is said that Intel will release further updates my increasing the capacity.
